Hanging Paper Lanterns

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also referred to as the Moon Festival and the Chinese Lantern Pageant, is held on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This normally happens round late September or early October when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest.

The Mid-Autumn Pageant is an important festival in the Chinese calendar, apart from the Chinese language New Year and Winter Solstice (also called Dongzhi Festival), and is a national holiday in some countries.

Traditionally, throughout the Mid-Autumn Festival, farmers celebrate the top of the summer harvesting season on this date. Chinese language members of the family and buddies gather to admire the brilliant mid-autumn harvest moon, and enjoy moon cakes and pomelos together.

Overthrow of Mongolian rule

According to Chinese language folklore, the Moon Festival commemorates an uprising in China against the Mongolian rulers of the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368) within the 14th century. Group gatherings have been forbidden by the Mongolian rulers and it was not possible to orchestrate a rebellion.

As the Mongolians didn’t partake within the eating of moon cakes, the insurgent leaders came up with the thought of timing the rise up to coincide with the Moon Festival. They distributed thousands of moon cakes to the Chinese language residents in the city and cleverly inserted inside each moon cake a bit of paper with the message: “Kill the Mongolians on the 15th day of the 8th month.”

On the night time of the Mid-Autumn Competition, the rebels efficiently attacked and overthrew the Mongolian government. Following the overthrow of the Mongolian authorities was the institution of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). As a result of the profitable revolt, the Mid-Autumn Pageant was celebrated with moon truffles on a national level.

Gerrard Street was the principle focus of the Moon Pageant in London and Chinatown was lit up by 1000′s of orange paper lanterns to mark the occasion. Hundreds of native Chinese language and guests from all around the world were there to participate in the anxiously awaited annual event. Many youngsters have been sporting the traditional vibrant colored Chinese costumes and so they look pretty in them.

This event was organised by the London Chinatown Chinese Affiliation and was held on Sunday, 11th October, a week later than usual, to coincide with the London Restaurant Competition (8th – thirteenth October 2009).

An out of doors stage was setup on Macclesfield Avenue, dealing with Gerrard Street. The opening ceremony began at 1.00pm with the ever-standard lion dance. The afternoon’s performances were a mixture of traditional and trendy entertainment including a lion dance, martial arts, Chinese language traditional music, hip-hop dance and Hong Kong Canto-Pop. Items were distributed to those that participated in quizzes or have been brave sufficient to go on stage to offer a performance. There were additionally food tasting, candy and noodle-making lessons and even a Chopsticks Challenge.

28 Chinatown restaurants participated in the London Restaurant Festival and offered mouth-watering particular menus of Oriental cuisines at special prices. Elsewhere Chinese language group shops have been set as much as promote Chinese language products and people promoting paper lanterns and followers seemed to have finished very properly on the day. And so did the lion who danced from one shop to another providing success to the Chinese language business community.

The Mid-Autumn Pageant in London was clearly loved by everyone. There was a lot enjoyable and laughter and even the drizzle near the top did not dampen the spirits of those that participated in this 12 months’s event.
