Disgraced Olympic Star Jones Signs With Wnba
Not sure if you ever have much reason to either watch or bet on WNBA games – yes, there are odds on the games – but here might be one to at least take a look when the season starts in mid-May: former Olympic sprinter Marion Jones is now a part of the struggling league. Get all your basketball news at Price Per Head Sports.
Jones, who was stripped of five medals from the 2000 Sydney Olympics after she admitted to using steroids, will play for the Tulsa Shock. If you weren’t aware that Tulsa had a team it’s because it didn’t until this year – the Detroit Shock moved to Tulsa at the end of last year.
The 34-year-old was released from prison in September 2008 and had her third child eight months ago and then resumed training for a comeback in the WNBA. She was a starting point guard on the 1994 North Carolina women’s national champions but hasn’t played organized ball since leaving Chapel Hill in 1997. Jones, 5-foot-10, went through an individual workout with the Shock Saturday in Tulsa, and accepted an offer to join the team. Jones was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2003 WNBA Draft but never played for the team.
“I’m extremely excited to join the team and the WNBA,” said Jones, who will make around $35,000 as a rookie free agent. “After a lot of thought, I realized this is a great fit for me because of Coach (Nolan) Richardson’s up-tempo style of play. I can’t wait to start training camp and learn more about the city and team I’ll be representing.”
The Shock open their debut season on May 15. Obviously this is basically a publicity stunt for the Shock, who need to lure fans. And maybe it will work for a game or two, but if Jones can’t play this all will be forgotten.
