Athlete Safety Is Extremely Important While Rutgers Athlete Paralyzed

A collision lately left a Rutgers player paralyzed. The injury occurred in a freak hit in an NCAA football game. The Eric LeGrand injury comes during a time of greater concern of athlete safety. The professional ranks are raising awareness of security issues for players. The National Football League has been on a campaign to reduce harm to players. Concussions and other head injuries are of especially good worry. Damage sustained by football players at all levels, especially by helmet contact, is an increasing national worry.

Player at Rutgers, in the course of the kickoff return, becomes paralyzed

Rutgers University had been playing a match against Army, and a kickoff return within the fourth quarter left a Rutgers football player paralyzed, according to ESPN. Rutgers defensive left tackle Eric LeGrand had been trying to tackle Army running back Malcolm Brown while he was returning the kickoff. He lowered his helmet before impact. He hit Brown hard. Then, he lay on the field without moving one bit. A few minutes later, numerous took action. He was put on a stretcher and transported out. LeGrand went to the hospital where it had been discovered that his 3rd and fourth cervical vertebrae were fractured. He will probably be paralyzed now. From the neck down, this is expected.

NFL athlete safety constantly a problem

The NFL has instituted rules for this season for greater player safety. Players who receive concussions during play must pass a battery of tests proving their ability to play again before being allowed to return practice. The National Football League is making sure you will find worse penalties for helmet to helmet hits. There is lots of risk when it comes to lowering one’s head when hitting an additional player. Darryl Stingley lowered his helmet as he was being tackled by Jack Tatum in a pre-season game against the Oakland Raiders in 1978, according to Sports Illustrated. Stingley became paralyzed. Tatum, nicknamed “The Assassin,” had been trying to stay away from a helmet to helmet hit. The Raiders, and especially Tatum, were stigmatized as cheap shot artists as a result.

Amusement comes with a cost

It’s always dangerous to play a sport, although it’s even more dangerous as the sport becomes more competitive. There is more of a greater risk to today’s athletes as players keep getting bigger, stronger and faster.
